Sen. Tina Smith is retiring, making this Minnesota's first Senate race without an incumbent since 2006. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan beat Rep. Angie Craig in the August 11 DFL primary with 59%; former sportscaster Michele Tafoya won the Republican primary with 52.1% over Adam Schwarze and Royce White. Republicans haven't won a Senate race here since 2002.
